September 4,2025: For the seventh year in a row, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has been ranked first in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, leading both the overall and engineering categories. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Education, highlighting the institute’s consistent excellence in academics, research, and infrastructure.
The NIRF evaluates institutions based on multiple parameters, including teaching and learning resources, research output, graduation outcomes, inclusivity, and perception among stakeholders. IIT Madras excelled in all areas, confirming its position as a top-tier institution in India’s higher education system.
Following IIT Madras in the overall rankings are IISc Bengaluru, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur. Other prominent institutions in the top ten include IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Guwahati, and NIT Tiruchirappalli.
In addition to leading the overall list, IIT Madras has maintained its first position in the engineering category for the tenth consecutive year. The institute also leads the newly introduced Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) ranking, which assesses institutions for efforts in environmental responsibility and inclusive development.
Educational experts note that the NIRF rankings provide valuable guidance for students selecting institutions and for colleges seeking to improve standards in teaching, research, and innovation.
IIT Madras’s sustained top performance reinforces its reputation as a centre of excellence and sets a benchmark for higher education institutions across India.
