September 4, 2025: Israel has intensified its military operations in Gaza City in early September 2025, leading to significant civilian casualties and worsening an already dire humanitarian situation, the United Nations has warned.
The escalation includes sustained airstrikes and ground operations targeting key urban areas, including densely populated neighborhoods such as Sheikh Radwan. Local authorities report thousands of residents have been displaced, with many trapped amid ongoing fighting. Hospitals and emergency services are struggling to cope with the surge in casualties, while access to food, clean water, and healthcare remains critically limited.
The UN has expressed grave concern over the situation. Miroslav Jenča, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, described the offensive as “another dangerous escalation” in the region, warning of “horrific humanitarian consequences” for the hundreds of thousands of civilians forced to flee their homes. UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) officials report there is insufficient shelter to accommodate the displaced population, intensifying the crisis.
According to recent assessments, over 40,000 children in Gaza have sustained injuries since October 2023, with many facing long-term disabilities. Malnutrition and famine are also rising, with more than half a million people at risk of starvation, according to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
The international community has voiced growing alarm. The United Arab Emirates warned Israel against any attempts to annex parts of the West Bank, calling such moves a “red line” that could threaten regional peace agreements. Meanwhile, ongoing military operations and restrictions on humanitarian access continue to exacerbate civilian suffering.
Reports indicate that in addition to Gaza City, tensions are rising across the region, including East Jerusalem, where Israeli authorities recently detained Palestinian shop owners, and incidents of thwarted attacks linked to Hamas have been reported. Protests within Israel against the government’s war strategy have also increased.
The UN continues to urge an immediate ceasefire and the rapid delivery of humanitarian aid to alleviate the growing crisis. Without urgent international intervention, the situation in Gaza risks further deterioration, with escalating civilian casualties and widespread displacement.
