September 5, 2025 – Mumbai Police have heightened security measures across the city after receiving a bomb threat via WhatsApp targeting the upcoming Ganesh Visarjan processions. The warning, which surfaced in the early hours of September, has raised concerns amid one of Maharashtra’s most significant cultural and religious festivals.
According to officials, the message claimed that explosives had been planted along potential Visarjan routes, aiming to disrupt the large gatherings expected during the final immersion ceremonies. Police have launched a comprehensive investigation to trace the origin of the message and determine its authenticity. Cybercrime experts are working alongside the crime branch to track the sender’s digital footprint.
Security Strengthened Across Mumbai
In response, authorities have increased police deployment, particularly at major immersion points such as Girgaon Chowpatty, Juhu Beach, and Powai Lake. The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) have also been placed on high alert. Sniffer dogs and metal detectors are being used at checkpoints, while CCTV surveillance has been intensified in sensitive areas.
“We are treating this threat with utmost seriousness,” a senior Mumbai Police official said. “While investigations are ongoing, we have ensured maximum precautionary measures to safeguard citizens during the Visarjan processions.”
Local police stations have been instructed to remain on round-the-clock patrol duty, and additional Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been deployed to manage crowd control in case of emergencies.
Festival of Faith Under Tight Vigil
Ganesh Visarjan, marking the culmination of the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival, draws millions of devotees each year. Large processions with chants, music, and traditional rituals converge at immersion sites, making it one of the busiest public events in Mumbai.
With the bomb threat emerging just days before the main immersions, authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant but not to panic. “We request people to report any suspicious objects or activities immediately,” said an official from the ATS.
The Maharashtra state government has also directed police to coordinate with intelligence agencies to monitor potential threats and ensure seamless communication during the festival.
Citizens Urged to Stay Alert
Despite the heightened security, organizers of several Ganesh mandals have reassured devotees that the celebrations will continue as planned, with necessary precautions in place. Volunteers are working alongside police to help regulate crowds and maintain safety.
Cyber experts highlight that such threats often emerge during large public gatherings to create fear and confusion. However, law enforcement officials emphasized that all alerts are treated with seriousness until proven otherwise.
Looking Ahead
The investigation into the WhatsApp message is ongoing, with police tracking the sender’s location through digital forensics. Preliminary findings suggest the message may have originated outside Mumbai, though officials have not disclosed further details.
As the city prepares for the grand Visarjan, authorities are balancing festive spirit with heightened caution. While no suspicious objects have been found so far, police have urged citizens to cooperate fully with security checks and remain calm.
