PM Modi Inaugurates India’s Largest Cruise Terminal in Mumbai

Mumbai cruise terminal inaugurated

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) at Ballard Pier, marking a major boost to India’s cruise tourism sector. The state-of-the-art facility, developed under the Cruise Bharat Mission, is the country’s largest such terminal and is expected to handle one million passengers annually.

Spread across 4.15 lakh square feet, the terminal has been designed with four levels and the capacity to berth five cruise ships simultaneously. Officials said the terminal can manage up to 10,000 passengers per day during peak seasons. It houses 72 check-in and immigration counters, along with parking space for over 300 vehicles, ensuring smooth passenger movement.

Architecturally, the MICT incorporates modern maritime motifs, with wavy ceilings and coastal design elements that reflect Mumbai’s identity as India’s gateway to the seas. The facility also provides enhanced operational efficiency with dedicated zones for arrivals, departures, and baggage handling.

Developed at a cost of ₹556 crore, the project is part of the central government’s efforts to strengthen maritime infrastructure and promote cruise tourism under the Sagarmala programme. Officials said the terminal will generate employment in hospitality, transport, and port-related services, while also boosting India’s profile in the global cruise market.

Tourism experts noted that Mumbai’s strategic location and the new terminal’s capacity will allow India to tap into the growing demand for cruise tourism in Asia. The government’s Cruise Bharat Mission aims to attract both domestic and international tourists, positioning Mumbai as a hub for luxury and leisure sea travel.

With its inauguration, the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal is expected to not only strengthen connectivity but also create new opportunities for economic growth. Authorities said the facility would play a vital role in transforming India’s maritime sector and enhancing its standing on the world cruise tourism map.
