A stampede at a political rally organized by actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in Karur district, Tamil Nadu, resulted in at least 40 fatalities and more than 120 injuries over the weekend, officials confirmed. The tragedy has ignited fierce accusations, as controversy mounts over a purported request by TVK for a temporary power shutdown during the event.
The rally, held late Saturday evening in Veluswamypuram on the Karur–Erode highway, drew a crowd estimated to far exceed permitted capacity. Though TVK initially sought permission for around 10,000 attendees, police say the actual gathering was well over double that number. Vijay’s arrival was delayed by several hours, and as he began to speak and move through the crowd, chaos erupted. Reports and visual footage show people collapsing, being trampled, and frantic scenes in hospitals thereafter.
A key flashpoint in the unfolding political debate is a letter from TVK requesting a temporary power shutdown during Vijay’s speech, purportedly for public safety. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) denies any such outage was granted, asserting that lighting remained intact and that any disruption was likely due to generator failures or damage to equipment amidst the crowd. According to the TNEB, the power cut request was rejected, and analysis of images supports that illumination was active during the rally. Critics argue that even a momentary power disruption in a tightly packed crowd could intensify panic and contribute to collapse.
In the immediate aftermath, police in Tamil Nadu filed a criminal case against three senior TVK leaders — Bussy Anand, Nirmal Kumar, and V.P. Mathiyalagan. Vijay himself was not named in the FIR. TVK, in countermeasure, has petitioned the Madras High Court seeking a CBI or independent probe, claiming the event was compromised by political interference. The court has agreed to hear the plea, and the party also seeks preservation of CCTV footage as part of its challenge.
Opposition voices were swift and vociferous. AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami criticized the event’s security arrangements, stating that full police protection might have prevented the disaster, and partially blamed Vijay’s delayed arrival. DMK representatives noted Vijay’s absence from the scene as the tragedy unfolded, contrasting it with their party’s practice of active oversight. Meanwhile, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin termed the episode a “great tragedy,” urged public restraint, and promised a judicial inquiry led by retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. He announced compensation of ₹10 lakh per deceased family and urged political restraint. In solidarity, the Tamil Nadu Federation of Traders declared a full shutdown across Karur district as a mark of grief, closing shops except essential services.
As the investigation proceeds, critical questions remain unresolved: Was the power shutdown request genuine or tactical? Did organizers and authorities adequately plan for crowd control? Which parties will bear legal and moral responsibility?
