Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya has once again raised concerns over an alleged large-scale birth certificate scam in Mumbai, claiming that more than 100 illegal certificates have been issued in the city. According to Somaiya, the fraudulent activity is concentrated in the Mankhurd, Govandi, and Deonar areas, which are now under scrutiny.
Somaiya, who has been consistently exposing alleged irregularities in Maharashtra, stated that the scam reflects a larger nexus involving local officials and middlemen. He alleged that the issuance of fake birth certificates not only compromises the integrity of government records but also poses serious threats to national security, as these documents can be misused for obtaining identity proofs, ration cards, and even passports.
The BJP leader highlighted that these fraudulent certificates may have been created to benefit illegal immigrants and criminal networks. “This is not just corruption—it is a matter of security. Fake birth certificates open the door to fake voter IDs, Aadhaar cards, and other sensitive documents. It is a serious threat to the system,” Somaiya said while addressing the media.
This is not the first time Somaiya has flagged such irregularities. Over the past few months, he has alleged that similar scams are taking place in other parts of Maharashtra, particularly in areas with a history of fraudulent documentation. His persistent campaign has drawn attention to what he describes as a “deep-rooted racket” operating with political and bureaucratic backing.
Meanwhile, civic officials have not issued an official statement on Somaiya’s latest claims. However, sources within the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) indicate that internal checks and investigations are underway to verify the authenticity of the birth certificates in question. If proven true, the findings could lead to strict action against those involved, including possible suspension or dismissal of officials linked to the scam.
Legal experts suggest that the alleged scam highlights loopholes in the existing system of birth and death registrations. Currently, municipal bodies handle these records, but experts argue that the lack of digital transparency and monitoring makes it easier for rackets to exploit the system. Calls for tighter digital verification processes and third-party audits have intensified following Somaiya’s revelations.
The political implications of the allegation are also significant. With Maharashtra gearing up for upcoming civic and assembly elections, Somaiya’s accusations have put pressure on the ruling coalition government to act swiftly. The BJP leader has urged Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to initiate a thorough probe and bring the culprits to justice.
The opposition, however, has accused Somaiya of using the issue for political mileage. Critics argue that while the allegations are serious, they must be backed by concrete evidence before drawing conclusions. Nonetheless, the controversy has reignited the debate over the integrity of Mumbai’s civic administration and the urgent need for reforms in document verification systems.
If the claims are substantiated, the scandal could become one of the biggest documentation fraud cases in the state. For now, the city awaits an official inquiry and a decisive response from authorities, as public concern over the misuse of government documents continues to grow.
