Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) is preparing to inaugurate India’s first-ever private-sector helicopter assembly facility in Vemagal, Kolar district, Karnataka. This venture will produce Airbus H125 helicopters domestically, in line with the government’s “Make in India” campaign to strengthen manufacturing and reduce dependency on imports in the aviation sector.
The new plant will span around 740,000 square feet and serve as the production centre for the Airbus H125, a helicopter celebrated for its adaptability and performance in high-altitude environments. Operations are expected to begin in 2026, with the first home-assembled H125 ready for delivery by early 2027.
A TASL spokesperson stated that manufacturing the H125 locally will significantly enhance India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem and reflect a strong commitment to innovation and self-reliance.
The Airbus H125 — formerly the AS350 Écureuil — is renowned for its exceptional operational record, including a unique achievement of landing on Mount Everest. Globally, it commands approximately 80% of the single-engine helicopter segment, with over 4,300 units active worldwide.
Initially, TASL plans to assemble ten helicopters annually, with capacity to expand production to meet growing demand in the Asia-Pacific region, which is forecasted to require over 500 units in the next two decades.
This partnership is expected to position India as a prominent hub for civil and defense helicopter production. The project will also create employment opportunities and promote technological advancement in Karnataka’s aerospace sector.
An Airbus representative described the initiative as a major milestone, reinforcing the value of combining private sector expertise with international collaboration. The first locally assembled H125 is anticipated to mark India’s growing capability in high-tech aerospace manufacturing when delivered in 2027.
