Bareilly Violence Over ‘I Love Muhammad’ Posters Leaves 81 Arrested, Heavy Police Deployed

Bareilly was engulfed in violence on September 26, 2025, after protests over “I Love Muhammad” posters escalated into clashes between protesters and police. Over 81 individuals were arrested, and a heavy police presence was deployed to contain the unrest, reflecting the growing communal tension in the region.

The controversy began earlier this month when “I Love Muhammad” posters were displayed during a Mawlid procession in Rawatpur, Kanpur. The act sparked outrage among certain sections of the population, triggering a chain of events that would culminate in large-scale unrest in Bareilly. Cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan, leader of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC), called for protests in support of the posters, though he later withdrew the call. Despite this, crowds gathered outside Khan’s residence and a nearby mosque, resulting in violent confrontations.

According to police reports, the protests quickly turned chaotic, with demonstrators engaging in stone-pelting. Police responded with baton charges and tear gas to restore order. In the aftermath, law enforcement arrested 81 people, including Khan, for their alleged involvement. Police investigations revealed that the violence was premeditated, fueled in part by coordinated social media messages.

In an effort to prevent the spread of unrest, the Uttar Pradesh government suspended internet, broadband, and SMS services in Bareilly district for 48 hours. Security forces, supported by drone surveillance, were deployed across the city to monitor the situation. Reports also indicate that political delegations, including Congress MPs Danish Ali and Imran Masood, were restricted from entering the city under claims of “preventive measures,” which sparked political controversy.

The implications of the Bareilly unrest have extended beyond Uttar Pradesh. In Jalandhar, Punjab, protests erupted after a Hindu youth reportedly shouted “Jai Shri Ram” during a Muslim demonstration connected to the Bareilly incident. This led to fresh communal protests and the registration of an FIR for hurting religious sentiments. Additionally, authorities arrested a 26-year-old from Muzaffarnagar for posting a provocative video related to the controversy.

The Uttar Pradesh police have emphasized that investigations are ongoing and warned against spreading inflammatory content. Meanwhile, community leaders have called for peace and dialogue, stressing the need to resolve differences through communication rather than violence.

The Bareilly incident highlights the fragile nature of communal harmony in India and the risks posed by provocative actions and misinformation. As law enforcement continues to enforce strict measures, analysts stress that long-term peace will require constructive interfaith engagement and proactive conflict resolution.
