In a significant cultural and administrative decision, the Yogi Adityanath-led government of Uttar Pradesh announced on Monday, October 27, 2025, that the village of Mustafabad in the Lakhimpur Kheri district will be renamed as Kabirdham. The proposed renaming is aimed at honouring the 15th-century mystic poet-saint Sant Kabir and restoring the village’s cultural heritage, according to the Chief Minister’s announcement.
During the Smriti Mahotsav Mela 2025 in Lakhimpur Kheri, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that the move to rename Mustafabad as Kabirdham aligns with the government’s ongoing strategy of reclaiming and restoring place names linked to India’s spiritual and cultural heritage. He emphasised that despite the village’s Muslim-sounding name, there are reportedly no Muslim residents in Mustafabad, prompting the decision to initiate the name-change process to better reflect local identity.
The Chief Minister placed the proposal within a broader narrative of renaming initiatives in the state, citing examples such as the renaming of Faizabad to Ayodhya and Allahabad to Prayagraj. He said that the present step seeks to “restore Kabirdham to its rightful name.”
In his address, the Chief Minister also criticised past governments, alleging that public funds formerly directed towards religious or cultural infrastructure were diverted. He asserted that under the current double-engine government—at both the state and central levels—resources are being channelled into the revival of sacred and pilgrimage sites, including temples, ashrams, and spiritual centres.
Yogi Adityanath further linked the renaming move to a message of national unity and civilisational heritage, associating Sant Kabir’s philosophy of social harmony and spiritual equality with the government’s vision. The administration reportedly plans to accompany the name-change with infrastructure and tourism development in the Lakhimpur Kheri region, focusing on eco-tourism and cultural revival initiatives.
Place-name changes in India often carry deeper socio-political and cultural meanings.
