Five Students Hospitalised After Suspected Food Poisoning at Ghatkopar School Canteen

Five students from a private school in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital on Monday afternoon after showing symptoms of suspected food poisoning. The incident occurred shortly after the children, aged between 10 and 11, consumed samosas served at the school canteen.

Sudden Onset of Symptoms

According to school officials, the incident unfolded around 2:15 p.m., when several students began experiencing severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dizziness soon after eating the snack during their break. Alarmed teachers immediately alerted the school administration, which arranged for the children to be transported to the hospital for urgent medical care.

The five affected students — four boys and one girl — were admitted for observation. Medical officers at Rajawadi Hospital confirmed that two of the children were treated as outpatients and were found to be in stable condition. Three others were discharged after their parents opted to take them home against medical advice, though all were reported to be improving.

Local police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have initiated an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning. Preliminary assessment suggests the possibility of contamination in the batter used to prepare the batch of samosas served that afternoon. School authorities noted that the affected children had consumed the snacks on relatively empty stomachs, which may have intensified the symptoms.

The school’s principal stated that the canteen, which has been operational for several decades, is now undergoing a detailed review of its food-handling practices. Samples of the food items have reportedly been collected by health authorities for laboratory analysis.
