In a decisive move aimed at strengthening public safety and maintaining security in sensitive terrain, authorities in the Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir have imposed a temporary ban on trekking, camping, hiking and other outdoor adventure activities in several popular high‑altitude areas. The ban comes amid heightened security concerns and suspicious movement in forested regions of the Kokernag subdivision, officials confirmed.
The directive, issued on January 2, 2026 by Sub‑Divisional Magistrate Prince Kumar under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, targets high‑altitude and forest zones including Margan Top, Chauhar Nag, and Sinthan Top. These areas have long been known for trekking, mountaineering, and scenic camping experiences, drawing both domestic and international adventure tourists.
“Unrestricted movement and outdoor activities like trekking, camping, hiking and similar pursuits in these areas are likely to adversely affect public safety and security,” the official order stated, underscoring the significance of the ban.
Security Inputs Trigger Preventive Action
According to administrative sources, the ban was implemented following credible security inputs from Jammu and Kashmir Police and other intelligence agencies. Recent reports indicated that certain individuals attempted to bypass checkpoints — known locally as naka — during late-night hours in the high-altitude Kokernag region. Officials described this as a serious breach of security protocol that could compromise broader public safety.
To bolster enforcement, the order directs the Station House Officer (SHO) in Larnoo to regulate movement and ensure strict compliance at all checkpoints. The general public has been strongly warned that violations will invite legal action.
Two‑Month Ban Period; Possible Extensions
The trekking, camping, and hiking ban is set to remain in effect for two months unless it is withdrawn or extended by the authorities. Officials stated that the decision could be reviewed based on security assessments and field intelligence reports.
List of Restricted Areas Under the Ban
- Margan Top — A high-altitude destination favored by trekkers and nature enthusiasts.
- Chauhar Nag — Forested terrain popular with hiking groups.
- Sinthan Top — Known scenic pass connecting Anantnag with the Kishtwar districts.
Tourism and Public Safety Balance
The ban on outdoor adventure activities is expected to impact local tourism, especially with the onset of winter and increased interest in snow-related activities. Although not officially categorized as tourist hubs like Gulmarg or Pahalgam, these high-altitude regions have increasingly attracted thrill-seekers and off-beat travelers in recent years.
Authorities emphasize that the public safety directive is a preventive security measure, not a permanent closure. Local tourism stakeholders have been advised to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and adhere to the restrictions to avoid legal repercussions.
Context of Security Measures in Kashmir
This latest order aligns with a broader pattern of heightened vigilance and preventive security measures across Jammu & Kashmir. Similar restrictions were recently imposed in other forested areas in the region following intelligence reports of potential threats, reflecting the administration’s priority on ensuring the safety of visitors and residents alike.
