India has officially started issuing biometric electronic passports (e-passports), marking a major step forward in travel security and convenience for Indian citizens. The rollout, which began in April 2024 under the Passport Seva Programme 2.0, aims to modernize India’s passport system by incorporating advanced technology used by over 120 countries worldwide.
An e-passport is a traditional passport embedded with a secure Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip that stores biometric data, including fingerprints and facial recognition information. This new feature enhances security, reduces the risk of forgery, and enables faster processing at immigration checkpoints equipped with automated e-gates.
Initially, e-passports are being issued in 13 cities including Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Goa, Jammu, Shimla, Raipur, and Ranchi, with plans to expand issuance to all Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) nationwide by mid-2025.
The application process for the new e-passport remains largely the same as for regular passports. Applicants must register online on the Passport Seva Portal, complete the application form, pay the fees, schedule an appointment, and visit the designated Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra to submit biometric data along with supporting documents.
Existing passport holders are not required to replace their current passports immediately. However, those applying for a fresh passport or renewing an expiring one will automatically receive the biometric e-passport if their regional office supports it.
Officials say the e-passport rollout not only aligns India with global travel security standards but also improves convenience for Indian travelers, making cross-border immigration quicker and safer.
The government encourages citizens to begin using the new e-passport system and assures that all personal data will be handled with the highest level of security.
