Purandar Airport Project Hits Roadblock as Farmers Voice Strong Opposition

Thousands of farmers gather in Purandar taluka to protest against the airport project.

The ambitious Purandar Airport project near Pune has run into significant turbulence as thousands of local farmers have raised strong objections to the proposed development. The project, which has been under discussion since 2016, is now facing renewed resistance amid escalating concerns about land acquisition, environmental impact, and the livelihoods of local communities.

The Purandar Airport, planned to be a second international airport for Pune, is a major infrastructure initiative spearheaded by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC). Envisioned to decongest the existing Pune airport and boost regional connectivity, the ₹14,000 crore project is set to span over 2,400 hectares of land in seven villages of Purandar taluka.

However, the recent revival of the project has reignited protests, with over 6,000 farmers submitting formal objections to the land acquisition process. These objections were presented to the Pune district administration in response to a notification issued under Section 11 of the Land Acquisition Act. Farmers and activists argue that the project would displace thousands of families, destroy fertile agricultural land, and threaten local water resources.

According to local farmer leaders, the airport plan disregards the agricultural importance of the region. “Our land is our identity. This project is not in the interest of farmers, and we will continue to protest until it is scrapped,” said one protester from Pargaon village. Many of the protesting farmers have demanded a complete withdrawal of the project and instead suggested alternative locations for development.

Environmental activists have also joined the opposition, warning that the airport’s construction could have severe ecological consequences. The region lies near the Sahyadri mountain range, a designated biodiversity hotspot, and is prone to water scarcity. They argue that the development will lead to deforestation, soil erosion, and pressure on already fragile groundwater levels.

On the other side, government officials have stated that the Purandar Airport is crucial for Pune’s future economic development. Officials argue that the project will create thousands of jobs, boost tourism, and establish Pune as a global investment hub. The administration has also promised fair compensation and rehabilitation for affected families.

Despite reassurances, the growing intensity of protests has raised questions about the project’s future. With political and public pressure mounting, the Maharashtra government may be forced to revisit its approach to stakeholder engagement and address long-standing concerns through dialogue and transparency.
