Palkhi Yatra Continues with Devotion Despite Orange Alert in Ghat Region

The revered Palkhi Yatra, a centuries-old spiritual procession dedicated to Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj, is marching forward with undeterred faith despite the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for heavy rainfall across Maharashtra’s Western Ghat regions.

As thousands of warkaris (devotees) continue the pilgrimage on foot from Dehu and Alandi to Pandharpur, authorities have stepped up precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the participants. The alert covers districts like Pune, Satara, and Solapur—key regions through which the yatra passes.

Orange Alert Triggers Caution, But Devotees Stay Resolute

The IMD’s orange alert signals a likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 204.4 mm) in a 24-hour span, particularly in hilly and flood-prone areas. Local administration has deployed additional NDRF teams, medical units, and shelter facilities in response to potential flash floods, landslides, or road disruptions.

Despite the warning, the spirit of the yatra remains high. “We are moving forward with faith and prayer. Rain is a blessing for us,” said a senior warkari near Saswad. Organizers have, however, adjusted travel timings, restricted overnight halts in vulnerable zones, and set up mobile weather alert systems for real-time updates.

Administrative Preparedness and Community Support

The Pune District Collectorate confirmed that around 15,000+ warkaris are being provided with basic amenities, including rain shelters, first-aid kits, and food services. In coordination with Zilla Parishads, Public Works Departments, and local police, alternate routes have been mapped to bypass waterlogged or risky terrain.

Medical camps have been stationed every 10 kilometers, with ambulances on standby and contingency plans for evacuations if necessary. Local villagers along the route have offered community halls and temples for shelter, upholding the tradition of hospitality towards pilgrims.

Historical Significance and Unshakable Faith

The Palkhi Yatra, dating back to the 13th century, is more than just a religious march—it’s a cultural celebration of unity, discipline, and devotion. Covering approximately 250 km over 21 days, it culminates in Pandharpur on Ashadhi Ekadashi. Even modern challenges like climate warnings haven’t dimmed the spiritual fervor.

“The Palkhi teaches us endurance and surrender to God. Whether it’s sunshine or rain, we walk with devotion,” said one warkari from Ahmednagar, echoing the sentiment of thousands more.
