National Turmeric Board Set Up After 40 Years; Headquarters in Telangana

PM Modi sets up National Turmeric Board after 40 years; HQ in Telangana.

The Government of India has announced the formation of a National Turmeric Board, with its headquarters to be established in Telangana. The declaration was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the state on Thursday.

The move comes after over four decades of persistent demands from turmeric farmers and traders, particularly from regions like Nizamabad, known for large-scale turmeric cultivation. The newly formed board is expected to support turmeric growers through improved market access, better pricing mechanisms, and research-based farming practices.

India is currently the world’s largest producer and exporter of turmeric, contributing more than 75% of global production. Despite this dominance, farmers have faced challenges such as price instability, lack of branding, and limited export infrastructure.

According to official sources, the board will focus on increasing turmeric exports, improving value-added production, supporting scientific research, and developing a strong marketing strategy for Indian turmeric in international markets.

Welcoming the decision, turmeric farmers in Telangana expressed gratitude. “We have been demanding a dedicated board for years. This decision brings new hope,” said Ramesh Reddy, a farmer from Nizamabad.

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the board will play a key role in integrating the turmeric value chain and boosting farmer incomes. He added that the initiative will position India as a leader in turmeric-based products, including those used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food industries.

The decision is also viewed as politically significant, coming ahead of key elections. Analysts suggest that locating the headquarters in Telangana may help consolidate support from rural and agricultural communities in the region.

The Turmeric Board is expected to become operational in the coming months, with appointments and policy frameworks currently under preparation.
