New Delhi, June 28, 2025 – Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has categorically denied recent claims circulating on social media regarding the imposition of toll tax on two-wheelers. The minister clarified that the news is fake and no such policy is under consideration by the government.
Several viral posts and videos had suggested that the Centre was planning to charge tolls from two-wheeler riders on national highways, leading to confusion and concern among daily commuters, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. Addressing the matter, Gadkari stated, “The reports about toll tax on two-wheelers are completely false and misleading. There is no such proposal under discussion by the ministry.”
Currently, two-wheelers are exempt from paying toll tax on national highways across India. This policy has been in place to ensure affordable travel for the general public and has not undergone any changes. The minister reaffirmed that the government remains committed to keeping transportation cost-effective for all segments of society.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) also issued a statement through its fact-checking wing, confirming that the viral news is baseless. It urged citizens not to fall for unverified social media claims and to rely only on official government sources for accurate information.
This clarification comes amid growing concerns about the spread of fake news online. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has taken steps to monitor misinformation and has advised the public to verify any such claims through legitimate platforms.
Public reaction to the clarification has been largely positive, with social media users thanking the minister for addressing the rumors promptly. Many also called for stricter action against those responsible for spreading such misinformation.
In conclusion, the government has made it clear that there is no toll tax for two-wheelers and any reports suggesting otherwise are completely false. Citizens are advised to stay alert and avoid sharing unverified content.
