Relentless rainfall over the past several hours has created a flood-like situation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, with the Chenab River swelling to critical levels. In response to the rapidly rising water levels, authorities have opened the floodgates of the Salal Dam to regulate the river’s flow and prevent a potential overflow crisis.
The heavy downpour has pushed the water volume in the Chenab beyond the safe limit in many areas. As a precautionary measure, the district administration decided to release water from the dam early on Monday, aiming to ease pressure on the structure and avoid uncontrolled flooding.
Emergency services across Reasi have been placed on high alert. Local disaster response teams have been activated, and residents living near the riverbanks have been advised to move to safer locations. Relief centers have also been prepared to accommodate people who may be displaced due to the flood threat.
“The situation is being closely monitored. Opening the Salal Dam gates was necessary to maintain safety and ensure water levels do not rise beyond control,” a senior official from the Reasi administration confirmed.
The continuous rainfall has already impacted normal life in several parts of the district. Roads have been flooded, agricultural lands are under threat, and some schools in low-lying regions have been temporarily shut down.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast more rainfall in the region over the next 48 hours, which could further increase the risk of flooding. Citizens have been urged to stay away from riverbanks and avoid travel in affected areas unless absolutely necessary.
