Indian Navy Responds Swiftly to Fire on Oman-Bound Cargo Vessel Carrying Indian Crew

Indian Navy rescue operation

June 30:
The Indian Navy successfully intervened in a maritime emergency on Sunday after receiving a distress signal from MT Yi Cheng 6, a Pulau-flagged merchant vessel en route from Kandla, Gujarat to Shinas, Oman. The ship, which had Indian crew members on board, reported a fire while navigating through the Arabian Sea.

The incident took place approximately 200 nautical miles off the western coast of India. As soon as the distress alert was received, the Navy’s Western Command launched a reconnaissance aircraft to locate and assess the situation. Aerial visuals confirmed smoke billowing from the vessel, indicating a serious onboard fire.

Acting swiftly on the information, the Navy dispatched a warship to the site to carry out rescue and firefighting operations. Naval personnel onboard the warship managed to contain the fire using advanced damage-control systems. All Indian crew members were reported safe, with no major injuries. Medical checks were conducted as a precautionary measure.

“The Indian Navy responded with urgency and professionalism, ensuring the safety of the crew and preventing the situation from escalating,” said a senior Navy official. “The vessel was stabilized and support was provided as required.”

MT Yi Cheng 6, carrying petroleum products, encountered the emergency during its voyage across international waters. Following the fire, maritime authorities in both India and Oman were notified. The vessel is now being assessed for damage, and further inspection will determine whether it can proceed to its destination or requires towing.

This operation once again demonstrates the Indian Navy’s readiness and capability to respond to maritime emergencies beyond Indian territorial waters. In recent times, the Navy has strengthened its role as a regional maritime security provider, frequently aiding commercial vessels in distress.

The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, and an investigation is expected to be conducted in coordination with relevant maritime agencies.

The Indian Navy reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian nationals at sea and providing humanitarian assistance whenever required. As trade routes across the Indian Ocean grow increasingly vital, the Navy’s proactive role in safeguarding lives and assets at sea continues to gain global recognition.
