Cloudburst Strikes Rudraprayag: Three Dead, Six Missing in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand Cloudburst: 3 Dead, 6 Missing as Floods Hit Rudraprayag

A sudden cloudburst in the Ukhimath block of Rudraprayag district late Sunday night claimed three lives and left six individuals unaccounted for, as intense rainfall caused widespread destruction across the region.

The incident occurred near the village of Phata shortly after midnight, following hours of continuous downpour. The unexpected deluge led to flash floods that swept away multiple dwellings and severely damaged public infrastructure, including roads and bridges.

Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were swiftly deployed to the affected zone. By Monday morning, three bodies had been retrieved, while six others — including women and children — remained missing.

District authorities confirmed that at least five residential structures had been washed away, with several others partially damaged. Access to several remote areas was obstructed due to landslides and road collapse.

Speaking to the press, District Magistrate Saurabh Gaharwar stated, “Rescue operations are being carried out under challenging conditions. The focus remains on locating the missing and providing immediate aid to the displaced residents.”

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences and assured that relief measures were being undertaken on priority. He directed the local administration to expedite assistance and ensure that all necessary resources were made available for the ongoing operations.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the region, forecasting continued heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid flood-prone areas.

This latest disaster brings renewed attention to the vulnerability of Uttarakhand’s mountainous terrain during the monsoon season. Experts have long warned of the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, emphasizing the need for improved forecasting systems and strengthened disaster response mechanisms.

Shelters have been arranged for those rendered homeless, and medical teams have been dispatched to provide assistance. Relief materials including food, blankets, and medicines are being distributed under the supervision of district authorities.

As the search for the missing continues, the people of Rudraprayag remain on edge, bracing for more rain in the coming days. The state government has reiterated its commitment to provide all necessary support to the affected families.
