IIT Kanpur Launches Sabal-50, a Next-Generation Combat-Ready Drone for Indian Defense Forces

July 1,2025 – Marking a milestone in India’s indigenous defense capabilities, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has officially launched Sabal-50, a high-performance, combat-ready unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed for military use. The advanced drone showcases India’s growing strength in defense innovation and aligns with national efforts to promote self-reliance in strategic technologies.

Developed through a collaborative effort between IIT Kanpur’s aerospace experts and private sector partners, Sabal-50 is equipped with modern features suitable for complex defense operations. It includes autonomous flight control, thermal and optical surveillance systems, and secure communication technology, allowing it to perform missions in varied and high-risk environments.

According to institute officials, Sabal-50 can reach altitudes exceeding 20,000 feet, fly for up to eight hours without interruption, and carry payloads of up to 50 kilograms. Its capabilities make it ideal for tasks such as reconnaissance, border surveillance, real-time intelligence gathering, and target tracking.

“This drone is a product of rigorous research and innovation,” said Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director of IIT Kanpur. “It is a testament to the technological progress India is making toward strategic autonomy in the defense sector.”

The drone has already undergone successful testing in varied field conditions, demonstrating its ability to operate in difficult terrains and weather conditions. Currently under final-stage evaluation by defense agencies, Sabal-50 is expected to be deployed for both combat support and non-combat operations in the near future.

In addition to military applications, the drone is also suitable for civilian tasks such as disaster response, search and rescue missions, and environmental monitoring. Its built-in safety systems, including automated return protocols and navigation redundancy, ensure reliable and secure operations during critical missions.

Defense analysts note that the Sabal-50 reflects India’s increasing focus on developing homegrown solutions to meet defense demands. With rising global interest in unmanned systems, India’s foray into indigenous UAV production places it among countries advancing rapidly in this domain.

The introduction of Sabal-50 by IIT Kanpur highlights the growing role of academic institutions in shaping India’s defense future.
