In a significant move aimed at enhancing passenger convenience, Indian Railways is gearing up to introduce a seat selection option during train ticket booking. Much like the feature available in airlines and luxury buses, this system will allow travelers to choose their preferred seats—window, aisle, or near exits—at the time of reservation. This digital upgrade is expected to roll out soon on select trains, beginning with premium services such as Vande Bharat and Tejas Express.
The Indian Railways has long been working toward modernizing its ticketing and onboard service systems. With the upcoming seat selection feature, travelers will be able to pre-book specific seats through the IRCTC portal and app. Officials from the Ministry of Railways confirmed that this pilot initiative is part of a broader plan to improve customer satisfaction and bring more transparency to the booking process.
Currently, the allocation of seats is automated, offering passengers limited control over their seating preferences. This often results in family members or groups being seated apart, especially during high-demand seasons. The new seat selection mechanism aims to resolve such issues while giving travelers the freedom to customize their journey experience.
This facility will initially be available for trains with reserved seating only, particularly those with chair cars and executive classes. Later phases may extend the option to sleeper class passengers. A nominal fee might be charged for selecting specific seats—similar to airline models—while general seat allocation will continue to remain free.
Expert View:
According to railway officials, integrating this system with the existing Passenger Reservation System (PRS) and IRCTC backend requires advanced planning and robust cybersecurity measures. “We’re testing the technology on high-end trains where the seating structure is fixed and manageable. Based on feedback and performance, we’ll consider extending it further,” an IRCTC spokesperson said.
The move has received a mixed response from passengers. While many welcomed the initiative for its added flexibility, some voiced concerns over potential additional charges. Nevertheless, industry experts believe that this step is a natural progression in the Indian Railways’ digital transformation.
Additional Features Under Consideration:
Apart from seat selection, the Railways is also exploring other value-added services, including real-time coach cleanliness updates, premium food options, and interactive onboard entertainment in semi-high-speed trains.
The feature aligns with the government’s “Digital India” vision and the Indian Railways’ mission to become a world-class travel service provider. This development follows recent upgrades like bio-toilets, CCTV surveillance, onboard Wi-Fi, and artificial intelligence for crowd management.
