Indore Becomes First City to Launch DigiPIN Digital Address System

DigiPIN digital address system

1 July, 2025-Indore has become the first city in India to implement the DigiPIN digital address system, marking a significant step towards digitized governance and smart city development. The system aims to provide a precise digital identity to every location by assigning a unique six-character alphanumeric code, known as DigiPIN, to each address.

Developed by the Department of Post in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), DigiPIN is designed to streamline location identification and improve service delivery in urban and rural areas. The system uses geospatial technology to map exact latitude and longitude coordinates to residential, commercial, and public properties.

According to officials, citizens can generate their DigiPIN through a dedicated portal or mobile application by selecting their location on a digital map. The generated code is linked to the user’s Aadhaar and mobile number for authentication and ease of use.

The implementation of DigiPIN is expected to benefit a range of services including e-commerce deliveries, emergency responses, utility management, and government schemes. By eliminating the dependency on traditional, often confusing, address formats, DigiPIN aims to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of location-based services.

Indore was selected for the pilot project due to its consistent top ranking in the Swachh Survekshan and its track record in adopting smart city initiatives. The Indore Municipal Corporation, along with India Post and the National Informatics Centre (NIC), has started public outreach campaigns to promote the adoption of DigiPIN among residents. QR codes representing individual DigiPINs are also being distributed to homes and businesses for easy access and display.

Officials noted that the system will also help formalize addresses in slum areas and rural zones, giving every household a recognized digital identity. This can facilitate access to government services, financial inclusion, and emergency aid.

Encouraged by the successful launch in Indore, the government is planning a phased rollout of DigiPIN across other major Indian cities. The initiative is expected to be integrated with key platforms like UIDAI, India Post, and various municipal systems to create a unified national address database.

The DigiPIN project is a part of the broader Digital India mission, which aims to harness technology for improved governance, citizen empowerment, and infrastructure development. With this launch, India joins a growing list of countries leveraging digital geocoding to modernize address systems and enhance public service delivery.

The success of the DigiPIN system in Indore is likely to serve as a model for other cities, setting the foundation for a more accurate, inclusive, and technology-driven approach to address management in the country.
