Uttar Pradesh Becomes First State to Offer Subsidy for EV Charging Stations

Uttar Pradesh EV policy

1 July, 2025-Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in India to roll out a dedicated subsidy scheme for setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The initiative, launched under the state’s Electric Vehicle Policy 2024, aims to boost clean mobility and strengthen EV infrastructure by offering financial assistance to individuals and organizations establishing charging facilities.

According to the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), the state government will provide subsidies of up to 60% on the cost of setting up EV charging stations. The policy covers both fast and slow chargers, with additional incentives for installations in public areas, highways, and less-developed regions.

As per the guidelines, the subsidy will be available to private companies, government institutions, housing societies, and entrepreneurs. Proposals involving solar-powered charging stations will be given preference, aligning with the state’s push toward renewable energy integration.

A UPNEDA official stated that the scheme is designed to eliminate key barriers to EV adoption, particularly the lack of accessible charging infrastructure. “Our goal is to build a robust network of charging stations across urban and rural areas, making EV usage more convenient and sustainable,” the official said.

To ensure timely execution, the government has set up a single-window system for quick clearances, approvals, and disbursal of financial assistance. Priority will be given to projects proposed in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where the EV infrastructure is still developing.

The subsidy scheme is expected to significantly encourage investment in the green mobility sector and help generate employment in the areas of equipment manufacturing, operations, and maintenance.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move. The Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) called it a “model initiative” that could serve as a template for other states. “Uttar Pradesh has addressed a critical gap in the EV ecosystem. This subsidy will accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and contribute to India’s national goal of reducing carbon emissions,” said a spokesperson from SMEV.

EV adoption in Uttar Pradesh has seen steady growth in recent years. With this new initiative, the government aims to further increase EV penetration by reducing range anxiety and improving accessibility to charging points.

The state plans to monitor the implementation of the policy using a centralized digital platform, which will track the location, usage, and performance of charging stations. The platform will also make real-time data available to the public.

Uttar Pradesh’s move comes in line with the Centre’s larger vision of achieving 30% electric vehicle usage by 2030. Experts believe this first-of-its-kind subsidy scheme could pave the way for a nationwide policy shift, encouraging other states to adopt similar models.

The state government has expressed confidence that this step will not only support sustainable transportation but also help in achieving its climate goals, reduce vehicular pollution, and create a green economic framework for the future.
