New Delhi, July 2, 2025 — The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced that Vedic Mathematics will be introduced as a part of the curriculum for students of Classes 6 to 8 across India. The move is part of the ongoing educational reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to integrate India’s traditional knowledge systems with modern pedagogy.
According to officials, the content will be provided in the form of supplementary reading material, not as a part of the main syllabus or examination pattern. The objective is to enhance mental calculation skills, improve mathematical thinking, and increase student interest in mathematics.
The new module will include sutras (formulae) and techniques derived from ancient Indian scriptures, primarily the Vedas, known for their efficient and fast methods of solving complex mathematical problems. The NCERT clarified that the material is meant to serve as an additional learning tool rather than a replacement for conventional mathematical methods.
This initiative aligns with NEP 2020’s focus on holistic and interdisciplinary education and seeks to instill a sense of pride in India’s intellectual traditions. The Ministry of Education has welcomed this step, stating that incorporating traditional practices like Vedic Mathematics helps students develop a deeper conceptual understanding of arithmetic while staying rooted in India’s cultural heritage.
While the move has been appreciated by many educators and parents, some academics have expressed concern over teacher preparedness and student comprehension, suggesting the need for proper training programs to ensure smooth implementation.
Educational analysts believe this will particularly benefit students who struggle with conventional mathematical approaches, offering them alternative strategies for learning and problem-solving. The material is expected to be rolled out by the beginning of the 2025–26 academic session.
The NCERT is currently in the process of finalizing the supplementary book, which will be made available in multiple languages to cater to a diverse student population.
