3.61 Lakh Devotees Treated During Palkhi Yatra by Health Dept

In a remarkable public health effort, the Maharashtra Health Department has provided medical treatment to over 3.61 lakh devotees participating in the annual Palkhi procession, one of the state’s largest religious pilgrimages.

According to official data released by the department, a total of 3,61,496 Warkaris (devotees) received treatment at various health centers, temporary camps, and mobile medical units set up along the procession route. The annual pilgrimage, which involves the journey of the sacred padukas (footprints) of saints Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar to Pandharpur, attracts lakhs of participants every year.

Over 1,064 medical teams were deployed throughout the route, equipped with doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and emergency staff to handle health-related emergencies. The majority of cases involved dehydration, foot injuries, viral infections, and respiratory issues, which are common among devotees walking long distances, often in challenging weather conditions.

The health department also undertook preventive measures to maintain hygiene and public health. As part of this, more than 13.85 lakh oral rehydration salt (ORS) packets were distributed. Regular sanitation checks, clean drinking water supply, and food hygiene monitoring were implemented at all rest camps.

Director of Health Services, Dr. Nitin Ambadekar, praised the coordinated effort, stating, “Despite the high footfall and monsoon challenges, our health teams worked around the clock to ensure that no major health incidents occurred during the Yatra. This is a testament to the planning and dedication of our staff.”

Ambulances with emergency services were stationed along the route to provide rapid medical assistance and transport for critical patients when needed. The department also conducted daily health screenings, particularly for fever and other symptoms of contagious diseases, to ensure early detection and control.

The Palkhi procession, deeply rooted in the Warkari tradition, covers a distance of over 250 kilometers and lasts for approximately three weeks, culminating in Pandharpur on Ashadhi Ekadashi. It is not only a spiritual journey but also a logistical challenge for state authorities.

This year’s successful health response is being viewed as a model for future large-scale pilgrimages, balancing faith and public safety through effective planning, coordination, and on-ground execution.
