3 July, 2025-The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a spell of continued rainfall for Pune over the coming days, following significant precipitation already recorded in the surrounding ghat regions. The forecast indicates the likelihood of moderate to heavy showers, with a yellow alert issued for several areas to caution against potential disruptions.
According to IMD’s latest bulletin, the monsoon is currently active over the Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada regions, with Pune expected to experience intermittent but intense rainfall over the next 48 to 72 hours. As of Wednesday morning, Lonavala, Tamhini, and other parts of the Western Ghats witnessed rainfall exceeding 100 mm, raising concerns over waterlogging and minor landslides in hilly terrain.
While Pune city itself received light to moderate showers early this week, weather models suggest a strengthening of the monsoon system due to a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal. This development is likely to enhance moisture-laden winds toward central Maharashtra, increasing rainfall intensity in urban and suburban pockets.
The IMD has urged citizens to remain cautious, particularly during peak hours, as increased rainfall may lead to temporary traffic snarls and delays in public transportation. Commuters are advised to monitor local updates and plan accordingly, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Water reservoirs supplying Pune, including Khadakwasla, Temghar, Varasgaon, and Panshet, have begun showing a slight rise in storage levels, offering a much-needed relief after a dry start to the monsoon season. As of 2 July, the collective water storage in the four dams stood at approximately 30% of total capacity—an improvement compared to the same period last year.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has activated its disaster management teams and increased the frequency of drain-cleaning operations to prevent urban flooding. Officials stated that emergency response systems, including helplines and ward-level monitoring teams, are on standby for quick action if waterlogging or tree falls occur during heavy rainfall.
Environmental experts have emphasized the importance of preserving green cover and natural drainage systems in the wake of urban expansion. “With intensified rainfall patterns and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, cities like Pune must invest in climate-resilient infrastructure,” said Dr. Rakesh Deshmukh, a senior climate researcher.
Looking ahead, the IMD forecasts continued rainfall activity till at least 7 July, with possible intensification depending on the movement of the low-pressure system. Citizens are encouraged to follow official advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during peak showers, and remain prepared for power outages or temporary communication disruptions.
