3 July, 2025-In light of persistent rainfall in the dam catchment areas, the discharge from Khadakwasla Dam was increased to 8,522 cusecs on Wednesday. Authorities have issued an alert, urging residents near the Mutha River and surrounding low-lying areas to exercise caution.
The irrigation department confirmed the move, stating that the rising inflows from upstream reservoirs — including Panshet and Varasgaon — have significantly raised water levels in the Khadakwasla reservoir. To maintain dam safety and manage capacity, a controlled release of water has become essential.
As of Wednesday morning, Khadakwasla Dam had reached nearly 65% of its total storage. Officials have noted that the ongoing inflow, combined with weather forecasts predicting continued rainfall, requires proactive water management to avoid overflow or structural stress on the reservoir.
Increased Monitoring and Safety Measures in Place
With the increased water release, authorities are closely observing the Mutha River’s water level. Local disaster management units have been activated, and municipal staff have begun precautionary inspections of bridges, drainage networks, and flood-prone zones.
“Water discharge has been carefully increased to prevent overflow and ensure safety. The public is advised not to venture near the riverbanks and to avoid areas with high water currents,” said an official from the water resources department.
Emergency teams are on alert, and warning sirens have been sounded in certain riverside localities. Residents in flood-sensitive zones have been asked to remain indoors and stay updated through official communication channels.
Forecast Predicts Continued Rainfall
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across the region over the next two days, which may further impact the water levels in all four major dams supplying the city.
Given the conditions, further adjustments in water discharge from Khadakwasla and other reservoirs cannot be ruled out. The irrigation department is coordinating with the disaster response team to monitor the situation in real time.
