4 July, 2025– A major uproar has erupted in Mumbai’s business community following an alleged assault by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers on a Gujarati shopkeeper over a language-related dispute. The incident, which took place earlier this week, has triggered widespread protests by traders across various markets in the city, demanding action against those responsible and calling for an end to linguistic intimidation.
According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary police reports, a group of MNS workers reportedly confronted the shopkeeper, identified as Jignesh Patel, for not speaking in Marathi while attending to customers. The confrontation soon escalated into a physical assault, leaving Patel injured. The altercation has reignited concerns about regional language imposition and the recurring pattern of linguistic chauvinism in Mumbai’s multicultural commercial hubs.
Business associations, including key trader unions from areas like Zaveri Bazaar, Dadar, and Borivali, observed a half-day bandh on Wednesday to condemn the attack. Protesters carried placards with messages like “Language Should Unite, Not Divide” and “Stop Targeting Traders,” expressing solidarity with the victim and denouncing the politicization of language.
“The state must act firmly to protect the rights of every Indian to conduct business in the language of their choice,” said Rajesh Shah, President of the Mumbai Traders Federation. “This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. Traders are here to work and contribute to the economy, not to be bullied over which language they speak.”
Opposition parties have seized on the incident to criticize the state government for its alleged inaction in curbing MNS’s aggressive tactics. “These repeated attacks reflect the growing lawlessness and intolerance under the current administration,” said a senior Congress leader. “Cultural pride should not translate into violence or discrimination.”
Meanwhile, the MNS leadership has maintained a defiant stance, reiterating its long-held position advocating for the primacy of Marathi in public dealings within Maharashtra. However, the party has distanced itself from the violence, claiming the actions of the involved workers were “individual responses” and not part of any organized directive.
The police have registered an FIR and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify all individuals involved in the attack. “We are taking the matter seriously and assure swift legal action against the culprits,” a senior Mumbai police official stated.
The incident has once again brought to the fore the fragile balance between regional identity and cosmopolitan coexistence in Mumbai, a city known for its cultural diversity and economic vibrancy. Civic groups, human rights advocates, and linguistic experts have called for greater awareness, legal safeguards, and educational efforts to promote mutual respect among communities.
