Madhya Pradesh to Launch First Aircraft Maintenance Hub at Bhopal Airport by 2026

Bhopal Airport MRO

4 July, 2025-Bhopal’s Raja Bhoj Airport is set to become the site of Madhya Pradesh’s first aircraft Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility, with completion targeted for 2026. This ambitious project marks a significant milestone for the state’s aviation sector and aims to meet the growing demand for localized aircraft servicing in central India.

The MRO facility will be developed within the existing airport infrastructure and will offer a wide range of services including routine maintenance, engine servicing, component repairs, and airframe inspections for narrow-body aircraft. This development is expected to reduce dependence on other regions for aircraft repairs and overhauls.

The project will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to ensure both investment efficiency and technical expertise. Authorities have confirmed that land allocation has been finalized, and the bidding process for selecting a private partner is expected to commence in late 2025.

With the Indian aviation sector experiencing steady growth, particularly in regional connectivity, the need for MRO hubs in tier-2 cities like Bhopal has become more critical. The introduction of such a facility will not only improve aircraft turnaround time but also make Bhopal a preferred destination for airlines seeking efficient servicing.

Industry analysts forecast significant economic benefits from the project. The MRO unit is expected to create over 500 direct job opportunities, along with numerous indirect roles in logistics, support services, and local supply chains. It also aligns with broader national initiatives aimed at promoting infrastructure development and self-reliance in the aerospace sector.

Officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) emphasized that the facility will support government efforts under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme and the “Make in India” initiative by strengthening the state’s aviation support ecosystem. By offering on-ground technical solutions, the center is anticipated to reduce the cost and time currently spent on outsourcing maintenance to other states or countries.

Once operational, the MRO center in Bhopal will cater to airlines operating across central and northern India, significantly enhancing the airport’s strategic and economic importance. It is also expected to attract private carriers and charter service providers looking for efficient and affordable servicing solutions.

The establishment of the MRO facility represents a forward-looking investment in infrastructure and employment, positioning Madhya Pradesh as a new contributor in India’s rapidly growing aviation maintenance market. As work begins on this landmark project, both state and central aviation authorities are optimistic about its potential impact on regional and national aviation dynamics.
