5 July, 2025-Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that while the party may control the state legislature, the MNS holds real influence on the ground. The remarks were made during a public rally on Saturday, where Thackeray addressed a large gathering of party workers and supporters.
“You may have power in the Vidhan Sabha, but we have power in the streets. Do not test our patience. People are watching everything,” Thackeray declared. His comments come amid rising political tensions in Maharashtra and growing public discontent over governance issues.
Thackeray criticized the BJP for what he called its detachment from ground realities and accused the party of focusing solely on maintaining legislative power while ignoring the concerns of the common people. He said the government’s failure to address key issues such as unemployment, inflation, and poor civic infrastructure was eroding public trust.
Political observers believe that Thackeray’s remarks are part of a calculated strategy to reposition the MNS ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. The MNS, which has seen limited electoral success in recent years, appears to be intensifying efforts to mobilize support among urban and Marathi-speaking voters.
The MNS chief also took indirect digs at the BJP’s central leadership, stating, “Delhi does not understand the pulse of Mumbai. Let them come here and face the people without police protection.” The statement drew strong reactions from both party loyalists and critics, with many interpreting it as a direct challenge to the BJP’s authority.
Thackeray accused the ruling party of undermining regional voices and neglecting local development. “This government is only interested in numbers and power. But when the public rises, no seat count will protect you,” he said.
His speech comes at a time when several urban centers in Maharashtra are grappling with deteriorating infrastructure, water shortages, and traffic congestion. Many citizens have expressed frustration with the current administration, fuelling speculation about shifting political loyalties ahead of the civic polls.
In recent months, opposition voices in the state, including from the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress, have become more vocal in their criticism of the BJP-led government. Thackeray’s comments are likely to further intensify the political debate and reshape alliances as the state prepares for critical local body elections.
With political temperatures rising, Raj Thackeray’s aggressive posture signals the beginning of a more confrontational phase in Maharashtra politics, where street influence and public sentiment may prove just as important as legislative strength.
