9 July, 2025-In a symbolic gesture of cultural diplomacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday gifted a kalash (sacred vessel) filled with holy water from the Saryu River to his Trinidad and Tobago counterpart, Dr. Keith Rowley. The move underscores the deepening cultural and spiritual ties between India and the Caribbean nation, which shares a significant Indian diaspora population.
The Saryu River, flowing through the historic city of Ayodhya, holds immense religious and cultural importance in Hindu tradition. Revered as a sacred river in several ancient scriptures, it is closely associated with the epic Ramayana and Lord Rama, who is believed to have spent much of his life near its banks. By presenting the kalash during a high-level bilateral meeting, PM Modi aimed to not only strengthen diplomatic relations but also highlight shared cultural roots between the two nations.

Trinidad and Tobago, home to over 37% people of Indian descent, has long-standing historical ties with India dating back to the 19th century when Indian indentured laborers were brought to the Caribbean. During the meeting, both leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, renewable energy, education, and technology.
