Congress MP Rahul Gandhi led a major opposition rally to the Election Commission’s office in Patna on Tuesday, raising serious concerns over the ongoing electoral roll revision in Bihar. The protest, joined by leaders from multiple parties, was organized to oppose what they termed as politically driven tampering of the voter list ahead of the crucial Bihar Assembly elections.
The demonstration featured a unified front of opposition leaders from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Trinamool Congress (TMC), CPI(M), and others. The leaders alleged that the current revision of electoral rolls is being conducted in a biased and opaque manner, potentially affecting lakhs of voters, particularly from marginalized communities.
Rahul Gandhi, addressing supporters outside the EC office, said, “This is not just about names on a list — it’s about safeguarding democracy. We believe that the revision process is targeting minorities, Dalits, and backward classes in an attempt to reduce their voting power.”
He further accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misusing constitutional mechanisms to manipulate the electoral process in its favor. “When the government fears losing, it resorts to controlling the system. But we will not allow this to happen silently,” Gandhi added.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav also voiced his concerns, alleging that the Election Commission was acting under political pressure. He called for a fair and transparent process involving all stakeholders to ensure a free and fair election. “This is not just an administrative issue. It affects the future of Bihar’s democracy,” Yadav stated.
Opposition parties submitted a memorandum to the state’s Chief Electoral Officer demanding an immediate halt to the current voter list update. They also requested the formation of an all-party committee to supervise any further revision efforts.
The Election Commission, in response, stated that the revision process was being carried out according to established guidelines and assured that all complaints would be reviewed. Officials also reiterated that corrective measures would be taken wherever discrepancies were found.
Security was heightened across Patna as thousands gathered in support of the protest. While the rally remained peaceful, traffic was disrupted in several areas of the city due to the large turnout.
Political observers believe this show of unity among opposition parties is a strategic effort to highlight electoral issues and challenge the BJP’s dominance in the state. “This protest is not just symbolic — it’s a signal of what’s to come in the election season,” said political analyst Dr. Shikha Verma.
As Bihar prepares for upcoming polls, the debate around electoral transparency and voter disenfranchisement is likely to intensify. The opposition has made it clear that it will continue to pressure the Election Commission until fair practices are ensured.
