Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a rare standing ovation from Namibia’s Parliament on Tuesday after delivering a powerful address that emphasized India’s commitment to strengthening ties with African nations, particularly Namibia. The speech, delivered during his historic state visit, was hailed as visionary and inspiring by lawmakers and political observers alike.
PM Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to address Namibia’s Parliament, marking a new chapter in India-Namibia relations. His speech focused on deepening cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, digital technology, healthcare, education, and sustainable development.
“India stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Namibia,” PM Modi said, highlighting the historical ties between the two nations and India’s role in supporting Namibia’s independence movement. He also emphasized India’s growing partnership with the African continent under the India-Africa Forum framework.
Modi’s remarks on climate change, South-South cooperation, and reforms in global governance drew significant applause from the Namibian legislators. He called for stronger representation of African nations in global institutions like the United Nations and G20, stating, “A fair global order must give equal voice to the Global South.”
The address also showcased India’s willingness to share its digital transformation experience with Namibia. PM Modi offered technical assistance and collaboration to help build Namibia’s digital public infrastructure, similar to India’s Aadhaar and UPI systems.
Namibian lawmakers stood in unison at the conclusion of the speech, applauding Modi’s message of solidarity, partnership, and inclusive growth. The standing ovation is being seen as a strong gesture of goodwill and recognition of India’s role as a trusted partner in Africa.
Namibia’s President Hage Geingob, who welcomed Modi with full state honors, praised the Prime Minister’s vision and commitment to Africa. “India has been a friend of Africa in both our struggles and our progress. Today’s speech reaffirms that friendship,” Geingob said during a joint press briefing.
Modi’s visit to Namibia follows his engagements in South Africa for the BRICS+ Summit and is part of a broader outreach to strengthen India-Africa ties. Several bilateral agreements were signed during the visit, focusing on areas like green energy, capacity building, and pharmaceuticals.
Political analysts believe this visit could significantly boost India’s influence in Africa, especially at a time when global powers are competing for strategic partnerships on the continent.
PM Modi’s speech and the warm response it received reflect not only the historical closeness between India and Namibia but also a shared vision for the future. The visit is expected to lay the foundation for long-term cooperation across strategic and developmental sectors.
