10 July, 2025-In a significant development underscoring Maharashtra’s intensified anti-narcotics drive, the state government reported the seizure of illegal substances worth ₹153 crore in 5,001 registered cases over the past year. The sweeping crackdown, which also targeted e-cigarettes, banned tobacco products like gutka, and gambling operations, reflects a multi-agency effort aimed at curbing illicit activities threatening public health and safety.
According to official data, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and various law enforcement agencies have ramped up surveillance, inspections, and enforcement actions since July 2024. These efforts have led to an unprecedented number of raids and seizures, particularly in urban hubs and border districts. The haul includes substantial quantities of narcotics, synthetic drugs, contraband cigarettes, and unapproved vaping devices.
Among the seized items, gutka and flavored tobacco products made up a significant portion, highlighting the continued defiance of the state’s long-standing ban on smokeless tobacco. The ban, implemented to address rising cancer cases and oral health concerns, has often been undermined by illicit trade routes and covert manufacturing units.
In addition, authorities have intensified action against the rising trend of e-cigarette usage, particularly among the youth. Despite a nationwide ban imposed in 2019, e-cigarettes continue to infiltrate the Indian market through online platforms and underground networks. The FDA has reportedly confiscated large consignments of imported vaping devices and flavored cartridges marketed as lifestyle products but posing serious health risks.
The crackdown also extended to unlawful gambling operations, particularly those facilitated via mobile apps and online platforms. Over 300 gambling dens were reportedly shut down, and several hundred individuals were arrested in connection with betting rackets. The police have also identified several cybercrime elements linked to these operations, prompting further investigation into money laundering and foreign funding sources.
State authorities attribute the success of the drive to increased coordination between the FDA, Maharashtra Police, Excise Department, and Intelligence Bureau. The implementation of AI-driven surveillance tools, enhanced border checks, and public tip-off helplines played a key role in identifying and intercepting illegal consignments.
Speaking on the initiative, a senior FDA official noted, “This is not just a law enforcement operation; it’s a public health imperative. We are not only seizing illegal products but also dismantling networks that profit at the expense of public wellbeing.”
Experts have lauded the move but cautioned that sustained vigilance, stricter penalties, and broader public awareness are essential to ensure long-term impact. They argue that the root causes—ranging from demand among youth to the lack of effective rehabilitation for addicts—must be addressed in tandem with enforcement actions.
The Maharashtra government has indicated that it will continue the campaign with greater intensity in the coming months. Plans are underway to introduce legislative amendments for stricter punishments, as well as launch statewide awareness programs focusing on addiction prevention and digital literacy.
As drug trafficking and illegal substance use evolve with technological advancements, Maharashtra’s recent operation sets a precedent for other states aiming to tackle this multifaceted threat to public health and law and order.
