Pune: Demand to Rename Pimpri-Chinchwad as ‘Jijau Nagar’ Sparks New Chapter in Maharashtra’s Name Change Debate

Pimpri-Chinchwad renaming

July 12,2025:
The demand to rename Pimpri-Chinchwad as ‘Jijau Nagar’ has reignited political and cultural discussions across Maharashtra, adding a fresh chapter to the ongoing name change movement in the state. Political leaders, local organizations, and Maratha community members have come forward in support of the proposal, which aims to honor Rajmata Jijabai, the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The proposal gained momentum after several leaders from the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) voiced their backing during public meetings and rallies in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Supporters argue that renaming the city would be a symbolic tribute to Jijabai’s significant role in shaping Maratha history and instilling the values that guided Shivaji Maharaj.

“Pimpri-Chinchwad is not just a growing urban center but also a region with deep historical and cultural roots. Naming it ‘Jijau Nagar’ would reaffirm our commitment to preserving our identity and honoring the mother of Swarajya,” said a local MLA addressing the media on Thursday.

However, opposition parties have criticized the proposal, alleging it is politically motivated ahead of the municipal elections. Leaders from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP – Sharad Pawar faction) and the Indian National Congress have questioned the timing of the demand and called for more focus on civic issues like infrastructure, public transportation, and employment.

“This is not the time for symbolic politics. Residents are struggling with traffic congestion, water shortages, and unemployment. A name change will not solve these problems,” said a senior Congress corporator.

The debate over renaming cities is not new to Maharashtra. Recent changes, such as Aurangabad being renamed to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv, have similarly sparked widespread public and political reactions. These developments reflect a broader trend of using historical narratives to shape contemporary regional identity.

Historians and cultural scholars remain divided on the matter. While some view the renaming as a step toward reclaiming heritage and honoring historical figures, others caution that such moves risk politicizing history and distracting from developmental priorities.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has not yet made an official statement on the matter. However, sources indicate that the proposal may soon be brought up for discussion during the next general body meeting. A formal name change would require the approval of the Maharashtra Cabinet, followed by notification from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

With political parties preparing for upcoming civic elections, the demand to rename Pimpri-Chinchwad as ‘Jijau Nagar’ is expected to remain a significant topic in the political landscape. The outcome may influence not only local governance but also the broader narrative of cultural assertion and regional pride in Maharashtra.
