At least 63 people lost their lives and more than 85 were injured after a massive fire swept through a newly opened shopping mall in Baqubah, located in Iraq’s Diyala Province, late Wednesday evening. The incident has sparked national mourning and triggered an official investigation into possible negligence.
The fire began around 8:30 p.m. local time at the Al-Hayat Mall, a recently inaugurated commercial center that had quickly become a popular attraction for local residents. Preliminary findings suggest the blaze may have been caused by an electrical malfunction in one of the stores on the lower level. The flames spread rapidly, consuming large parts of the building within minutes.
Eyewitnesses reported chaos as thick smoke filled the air and people rushed to escape. Several individuals became trapped due to blocked exits and the absence of proper emergency systems. Many victims were families who had come to shop or dine.
