Parliament Disrupted Over Bihar Electoral Rolls; Rajya Sabha Adjourned to Mourn Shibu Soren

Bihar electoral rolls, Parliament disruption

August 4,2025 – Proceedings in both Houses of Parliament were disrupted on Monday, with the Lok Sabha adjourned amid opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day following obituary references to veteran leader Shibu Soren, who passed away recently.

In the Lok Sabha, opposition MPs stormed the Well of the House demanding an immediate discussion on the alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process in Bihar. Members of the Congress, RJD, and other INDIA bloc parties raised slogans and held placards, accusing the government and the Election Commission of manipulating the voter list in favour of the ruling party.

Speaker Om Birla repeatedly urged members to maintain order and allow the Question Hour to proceed. However, the continued disruptions led to the House being adjourned till 2 PM, and then for the day.

“We have raised a very serious issue concerning the integrity of our electoral process,” said Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. “The government must answer questions about the deletion and addition of names in Bihar’s voter rolls during the SIR process.”

Opposition parties allege that the voter list revision exercise conducted earlier this year disproportionately removed names from minority and backward communities, potentially affecting the outcome of future elections. They are demanding a high-level probe and a statement from the Election Commission on the criteria used during the revision.

Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, normal business was deferred following the death of Shibu Soren, a former Union Minister and founding leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar led the House in paying tribute to Soren, highlighting his decades-long contribution to tribal rights and regional politics.

As a mark of respect, the House was adjourned for the day after the obituary references.

The Monsoon Session, which began last month, has seen repeated disruptions over a range of issues, including NEET irregularities, the Manipur situation, and now, the Bihar electoral roll controversy. With only a few sittings remaining, legislative business has been severely impacted.

While the government has maintained that the Election Commission is an independent body and that the voter list revision followed due process, the opposition remains firm on its demand for an open debate.

The issue is expected to dominate proceedings in the coming days, as opposition parties intensify pressure for a parliamentary discussion.
