August 5, 2025 — Today marks six years since the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special constitutional status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The anniversary has reignited debates around the region’s political future, with increasing calls from local leaders and opposition parties for the restoration of full statehood.
On August 5, 2019, the Union Government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), revoked Article 370 and bifurcated the region into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The move was described by the Centre as a historic step toward full integration and development. Since then, the region has operated under Union Territory status with a Lieutenant Governor at the helm.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in a statement released on the anniversary, reiterated the government’s commitment to development and security in Jammu and Kashmir. “We have ensured peace, stability, and infrastructure growth in the region. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are seeing the benefits of integration,” he stated.
However, opposition parties and regional stakeholders expressed concerns over the prolonged delay in restoring statehood. Former Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said, “It has been six years, and the promise of restoring statehood remains unfulfilled. This is not just about governance but about restoring the democratic rights of the people.”
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) also issued a statement, urging the Centre to expedite the process of statehood restoration. “The abrogation of Article 370 was done unilaterally. While the government claims progress, true peace will only return when political rights are reinstated,” said PDP President Mehbooba Mufti.
Residents in both Jammu and Kashmir expressed mixed reactions. While some acknowledged improved infrastructure and security conditions, others voiced dissatisfaction with bureaucratic governance and lack of elected representation.
Security remained tight in the Valley ahead of the anniversary, with enhanced patrolling and drone surveillance in sensitive areas. Authorities reported no major incidents, and the day passed peacefully across the region.
Political analysts believe the statehood issue is likely to feature prominently in the upcoming Lok Sabha and possible Assembly elections. “While the BJP considers the abrogation a cornerstone of its nationalist agenda, the restoration of statehood could serve as a middle ground to appease public sentiment without reversing the constitutional move,” said Dr. Neelesh Verma, a political commentator.
In 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured the nation that elections would be held “soon” and that the restoration of statehood was on the government’s agenda. However, no concrete timeline has been announced so far.
As Jammu and Kashmir enters its seventh year as a Union Territory, the demand for political restoration and self-governance continues to grow louder. Whether the Centre responds with a clear roadmap remains to be seen.
