Mumbai Locals to Get More Coaches, AC Trains, and Auto Doors by Late 2025

New AC local train

Indian Railways unveils major suburban overhaul to ease congestion and boost commuter safety

August 7, 2025 — In a significant move aimed at transforming Mumbai’s suburban rail experience, Indian Railways has announced a large-scale upgrade of the city’s local train network by the end of 2025. The upgrade includes the introduction of new 15-coach trains, an increase in air-conditioned local services, and the installation of automatic doors on non-AC trains to improve safety and convenience.

The Mumbai suburban railway system, often called the lifeline of the city, currently serves over 7.5 million commuters daily. However, rising passenger volumes and frequent overcrowding have made train travel increasingly challenging, prompting urgent infrastructural improvements.

According to senior railway officials, the modernization plan includes the addition of nine new 15-coach rakes, which will be deployed across the Western and Central lines. These longer trains are expected to significantly boost carrying capacity during peak hours, offering some relief to passengers who often travel in cramped compartments.

In a major comfort upgrade, 60 additional AC local trains will also be introduced into the system. Currently, Mumbai operates around 56 AC services per day. The new trains will nearly double this number, making air-conditioned travel more accessible to the general public. Railway officials have also indicated that steps are being taken to rationalize fares and increase frequency to encourage greater commuter adoption of AC services.

Perhaps the most notable change in the works is the installation of automatic doors on non-AC local trains, a feature currently limited to AC rakes. This upgrade is aimed at curbing accidents caused by overcrowding and people hanging from open doors — a common and dangerous occurrence on Mumbai’s suburban routes. Trials for these safety enhancements are expected to begin in early 2026, with phased implementation thereafter.

The railway ministry, in collaboration with Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), has already floated tenders for the manufacturing of new rakes under the Mutual Fund Trust Structure (MFTS) model. Funding for the project is being sourced through a combination of public investment and public-private partnerships to ensure timely execution.

Officials have also emphasized that the upgrades will include advanced surveillance systems, GPS-enabled announcements, and energy-efficient technologies to align with Indian Railways’ sustainability goals.

The overhaul is part of a broader initiative under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3 and MUTP-3A), which seeks to expand and modernize suburban rail infrastructure to meet future demand.

With the upgrades scheduled for completion by late 2025, commuters in Mumbai can look forward to a significantly improved travel experience that promises greater safety, capacity, and comfort.
