10 Soldiers Missing, Army Camp Affected During Uttarkashi Rescue Operations

Uttarkashi cloudburst 2025

August 7,2025:
A sudden cloudburst in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand late Sunday night disrupted ongoing rescue operations, leaving 10 soldiers missing and an Army camp severely damaged. The incident occurred in the Harsil area, near the India-China border, where the Indian Army and other rescue teams have been deployed to assist local authorities following continuous rainfall and landslides.

According to official sources, the cloudburst triggered flash floods in the region, washing away parts of the Army camp located near the Lamkhaga Pass and cutting off road access. Multiple tents and temporary shelters were swept away in the deluge, making it difficult for search and rescue teams to continue operations in the affected terrain. The 10 missing soldiers were reportedly stationed at the camp when the cloudburst occurred.

The Uttarakhand State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and local administration have launched a joint search operation to trace the missing soldiers. However, harsh weather conditions, poor visibility, and blocked routes are hampering progress.

“The situation remains extremely critical. Our priority is to locate the missing soldiers and ensure the safety of the remaining personnel in the area,” said an official from the Indian Army. “Rescue teams are being airlifted to the site due to disrupted road connectivity.”

The Uttarkashi region, particularly areas like Harsil and Nelong Valley, has been experiencing intense rainfall over the past week, raising the risk of cloudbursts and landslides. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of the state, prompting heightened alert among disaster response teams.

In addition to the Army camp, several villages in the vicinity have also reported damages to property, roads, and agricultural land. Power and communication lines have been disrupted in many parts of the region. Emergency shelters have been set up, and affected civilians are being relocated to safer zones.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed concern over the situation and said that all necessary measures are being taken to provide assistance. “We are in constant touch with the Army and disaster response agencies. Every effort is being made to rescue those missing and to support the affected families,” he said in a press briefing.

This is not the first time Uttarkashi has faced such a crisis. The district, located in the fragile Himalayan zone, is highly prone to natural disasters, especially during the monsoon season. Experts have once again highlighted the urgent need for long-term infrastructure planning, early warning systems, and stricter environmental safeguards in the region.

The disappearance of 10 soldiers and the damage to the Army camp mark a serious setback in the ongoing rescue and relief operations in Uttarkashi. As search efforts continue under challenging conditions, the incident underscores the growing vulnerability of Himalayan regions to extreme weather events. Authorities are urging residents to remain alert and avoid travel to affected areas until conditions improve.
