9 August,2025:
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of facilitating large-scale “vote theft” in collaboration with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and subsequent state assembly polls. The Congress leader’s allegations have triggered a fresh political storm, with the ECI firmly denying any wrongdoing.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Gandhi claimed that the voter lists used during the recent elections contained a significant number of “fake entries,” allegedly enabling electoral manipulation. He cited the example of the Bengaluru Central parliamentary constituency, where the Congress claims to have identified over 1 lakh duplicate or fictitious voters.
“This is not just a case of negligence—it is a deliberate and coordinated attack on India’s democracy. The Election Commission, instead of safeguarding the sanctity of the vote, has become an instrument in the BJP’s hands,” Gandhi asserted.
Congress Presents Data, ECI Responds
According to the Congress, its internal review of voter rolls in several constituencies revealed anomalies, including multiple entries with identical names and addresses, as well as the presence of voters registered in more than one constituency. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has also filed a formal complaint with the ECI, demanding a thorough investigation and the removal of all disputed entries.
The Election Commission, however, has rejected the allegations as “factually incorrect and misleading.” In its official response, the ECI pointed out that the same voter rolls were recently used by the Karnataka government for its caste census exercise, suggesting that the data was considered credible by multiple state authorities.
“The integrity of the electoral process remains intact. Allegations of large-scale fraud are baseless and appear to be politically motivated,” an ECI spokesperson stated.
BJP Calls Allegations ‘Political Drama’
The BJP has dismissed Gandhi’s remarks as an attempt to undermine public trust in democratic institutions after electoral defeats. BJP leaders have accused the Congress of trying to “manufacture controversy” ahead of upcoming state elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Jharkhand.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur said, “Rahul Gandhi knows he has lost the people’s mandate. This narrative of vote theft is nothing but an excuse to hide the Congress party’s repeated failures.”
Political and Legal Implications
Legal experts note that if substantial evidence is presented, the matter could lead to a judicial review of the electoral process in specific constituencies. However, historically, proving large-scale electoral manipulation has been challenging without clear documentation or independent verification.
The controversy is likely to dominate political discourse in the coming weeks, especially as the opposition seeks to position electoral reforms as a key issue in the 2025 legislative agenda. Civil society groups have already called for increased transparency in voter roll management and third-party audits before elections.
For now, the ECI stands by the legitimacy of the 2024 Lok Sabha results, while the Congress vows to continue pressing for a probe into what it calls “the biggest electoral fraud in independent India.”
