India Moves Closer to Hosting 2030 Commonwealth Games with IOA Approval

Commonwealth Games 2030 India bid

August 13, 2025 — The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has formally approved India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar and New Delhi being considered as potential host cities.

Ahmedabad has emerged as the frontrunner, backed by modern infrastructure and recent inspections by the Commonwealth Games Federation delegation. Bhubaneswar, noted for hosting major hockey tournaments, and New Delhi, the 2010 Commonwealth Games host, are also strong contenders.

The proposed Games will feature key medal-rich sports such as hockey, badminton, wrestling, shooting, archery, squash and women’s cricket, along with traditional disciplines like kabaddi and kho kho.

The IOA will submit the final bid dossier by August 31, 2025. The host city is expected to be announced at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow in November 2025.

With Canada withdrawing from the race, India’s chances of securing the Games have strengthened, and the bid is seen as a step towards the country’s larger ambition of hosting the 2036 Olympics.
