Modi’s September US Visit to UNGA Set Amid Soaring Tariffs and Trade Tensions

PM Modi at UNGA podium

13 August 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to the United States next month to take part in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The visit may also include direct talks with US President Donald Trump, at a time when relations between the two countries are strained by a steep increase in American tariffs on Indian goods.

Rising Tariff Pressures and Tense Negotiations

The trip comes shortly after President Trump’s announcement to double import duties on Indian products, raising them to 50 percent. Washington has linked the decision partly to India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil. New Delhi has rejected the tariff hike, calling it excessive and unjustified. An additional 25 percent duty is scheduled to take effect later in August, putting further strain on Indian exporters.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has recently described India as “recalcitrant” in trade discussions, although he has expressed confidence that a breakthrough could be reached by October. Talks between the two sides have stalled in recent months over disagreements on market access and tariff concessions.

Strategic and Diplomatic Significance

The UNGA session, set to run from 9 to 29 September with major debates scheduled for the final week, will give India an opportunity to present its position on key global issues. Modi’s potential address is expected to touch on trade equity, energy security, and multilateral cooperation.

A face-to-face meeting with President Trump, if confirmed, would be closely watched as a test of whether diplomatic dialogue can help ease economic tensions. It could also signal whether both sides are willing to work toward a mutually acceptable trade framework before the end of the year.

Economic and Geopolitical Impact

Trade experts warn that the higher duties could severely impact India’s export-driven industries, particularly in electronics, pharmaceuticals, and automotive components. Many companies are already bracing for reduced orders, higher production costs, and a possible loss of competitiveness in the US market.

On a broader scale, the current standoff risks affecting India’s role in Indo-Pacific partnerships and its participation in initiatives such as the Quad. If tensions continue, India may strengthen its economic ties with other partners, including members of BRICS, to offset the trade impact.

Looking Ahead

Modi’s upcoming visit will be more than a diplomatic formality — it will be a crucial moment for determining the direction of India–US relations in the coming months. Observers will be watching for signs of progress in negotiations, the tone of Modi’s UNGA address, and any agreements that might emerge from potential bilateral talks.
