August 14, 2025: A massive cloudburst struck the Chositi area in Kishtwar district on Thursday, causing flash floods along the route of the Machail Mata Yatra. Officials reported that at least 10 people are feared dead, with several others missing or injured.
The cloudburst, which occurred in the remote Chositi village—the last motorable settlement en route to the Machail Mata shrine in Paddar sub-division—washed away a community kitchen (langar) and damaged critical infrastructure, including footbridges and pathways used by pilgrims. The annual yatra, which began on July 25, has been temporarily suspended as authorities coordinate rescue and relief operations.
In response, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow and directed civil administration, police, army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams to intensify rescue efforts. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed that rescue teams have been dispatched and assured that all possible assistance will be provided to affected families.
Heavy monsoon rains in the region have complicated rescue operations. Swift-moving waters and debris have hindered access to the affected areas, creating challenges for personnel working to evacuate stranded pilgrims and provide medical aid. Authorities are working to clear blocked routes and ensure the safety of survivors.
The Machail Mata Yatra, a high-altitude pilgrimage attracting thousands of devotees each year, has been severely impacted by the disaster. Local communities and religious volunteers have stepped in to provide shelter, food, and support to affected pilgrims, while also assisting in recovery efforts.
The tragic cloudburst underscores the vulnerability of mountainous regions to extreme weather events. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with priority given to rescue operations and the restoration of normalcy in the region.
