August 18, 2025 — An Army jawan was assaulted by toll plaza employees on the Meerut–Karnal Highway on Sunday night, leading to the arrest of six workers and deployment of additional police forces in the area.
Assault on Soldier
The jawan, identified as Kapil Kavad, was travelling to catch a flight for his duty posting in Srinagar when the incident occurred at Bhuni Toll Plaza in Meerut district. Police said the soldier requested a quick passage at the toll due to time constraints, which led to an altercation. He was allegedly tied to a pole and beaten by several employees.
Videos Spark Outrage
Videos of the incident circulated widely on social media, showing the jawan being restrained and assaulted. The footage drew sharp reactions from the public and triggered protests by local villagers near the toll plaza.
Arrests and Police Action
Meerut Police confirmed that six toll workers have been taken into custody, while one more accused is absconding. A case has been registered under relevant sections, including attempt to murder. CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts are being examined to identify other suspects.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) said teams were dispatched immediately after receiving the complaint. Security arrangements at the toll plaza have been reinforced to prevent further incidents.
Public Unrest
Following the assault, a group of villagers gathered at the toll plaza and damaged booths, leading to temporary disruption of traffic. Police intervened and restored order. Heavy force has been deployed to ensure smooth vehicular movement on the highway.
Similar Incidents
The case comes days after a retired soldier, Ramdayal Kushwaha, was fatally attacked in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, during a separate dispute. The two incidents have raised concerns about the safety of serving and retired Army personnel in civilian areas.
Current Situation
Authorities said traffic at Bhuni Toll Plaza has resumed under police supervision. Investigations are ongoing, and officials assured that strict action will be taken against all those found guilty in the assault.
