August 20,2025 – Growing dissatisfaction has emerged among city commuters as complaints of overcharging by Uber drivers continue to rise in Pune. Passengers allege that fares charged are often substantially higher than the rates displayed on the application, leading to repeated calls for regulatory action.
Several commuters have reported instances where drivers insist on cancelling trips booked through the app and demand cash payments instead, often quoting prices that far exceed standard fares. In some cases, passengers have alleged that surge pricing is being misused, with inflated charges even during non-peak hours.
The issue has caused considerable inconvenience to daily travelers who rely heavily on ride-hailing services for their commute. College students, office-goers, and senior citizens form the majority of those voicing concern. “The fare on my app showed ₹220, but the driver asked for ₹400 in cash. This has become a routine problem,” said a commuter from Shivajinagar.
City authorities have acknowledged the matter, with officials from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) stating that complaints regarding unfair fare practices have been received in increasing numbers over the past two months. “We are reviewing the grievances. Action will be taken against drivers who violate prescribed norms,” an RTO official said.
Commuter associations have urged the state transport department to intervene, citing the absence of strict monitoring as the main reason behind the growing problem. They demand the introduction of clear guidelines for app-based taxi services, along with penalties for drivers found guilty of overcharging.
Experts point out that while app-based cab services have offered convenience, regulatory oversight has not kept pace with their rapid expansion. “Overcharging complaints damage public trust. Without proper checks, commuters may hesitate to use such services,” noted a transport analyst.
Meanwhile, Uber has maintained that its fare system is transparent and app-driven, and any driver bypassing the platform’s payment structure is in violation of company policy. In a statement, the company urged passengers to report such incidents directly through the app for immediate action.
With rising fuel prices and an increasing cost of living cited as possible reasons behind the drivers’ demands for extra payment, industry observers warn that the dispute could escalate unless stricter measures are enforced.
For Pune commuters, the demand is simple: fair fares and reliable service. Until stronger regulations are introduced, however, the issue of overcharging is likely to remain a pressing concern across the city.
