Heavy Rainfall Prompts PCMC to Evacuate 950 Residents in Pimpri-Chinchwad

PCMC evacuates residents amid floods

August 20,2025: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Tuesday shifted nearly 950 residents to safer locations as rising water levels in the Pavana, Indrayani and Mula rivers threatened low-lying areas of the industrial city. The precautionary measure came after continuous heavy rainfall in the region and increased discharge from upstream dams led to flooding concerns.

According to civic officials, multiple stretches along the riverbanks were inundated as the water level rose significantly during the past 24 hours. The affected areas include residential pockets and informal settlements situated close to the rivers. Evacuation teams, comprising disaster management personnel, fire brigade staff and local volunteers, were deployed to assist residents in relocating to temporary shelters arranged by the corporation.

Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh confirmed that residents were moved out as a preventive step. “Our priority is to ensure that there is no loss of life. The situation is being closely monitored and relief measures have been activated in vulnerable zones,” he stated.

Heavy rainfall in Pune district over the last three days has compelled authorities to release excess water from the Pavana and other upstream dams, which in turn has contributed to the swelling of rivers in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The Indrayani river, which flows through several densely populated localities, was reported to be flowing close to the danger mark by late evening.

Traffic disruptions were also reported from several parts of the city, with waterlogging affecting arterial roads and creating difficulties for commuters. The municipal corporation has appealed to citizens residing in low-lying and riverbank settlements to remain alert and heed official advisories.

Relief centres have been set up at municipal schools and community halls, where food, water and medical aid are being provided. Officials have also arranged round-the-clock helplines to address emergency calls. Meanwhile, the district administration has kept the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on standby in case the situation worsens.

Meteorological forecasts indicate that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue across Pune and adjoining areas over the next 48 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has urged residents to exercise caution, particularly near water bodies.

This is not the first time the city has faced such challenges during the monsoon. Last year, several localities along the Pavana and Indrayani rivers experienced flooding due to similar dam discharges, highlighting the recurring vulnerability of riverbank communities in the region.

With rainfall showing no signs of abating, civic authorities reiterated their focus on safeguarding lives and maintaining essential services. “We are in constant touch with dam authorities and disaster response agencies. Citizens must cooperate with the administration to tide over this situation,” officials said.
