August 22, 2025: The rapid adoption of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is significantly reducing the use of debit cards, a recent report by State Bank of India (SBI) Research has revealed. The study highlights a clear shift in consumer payment preferences toward digital and instant transaction methods.
According to the report, for every ₹1 increase in UPI transaction value, debit card transaction value declines by approximately 14 paise. This trend, observed between 2021 and 2025, underscores UPI’s growing dominance over traditional card-based payments. Analysts attribute this shift to the convenience and speed offered by UPI, which allows users to make instant payments without relying on physical cards.
The research further indicates that the decline in debit card usage is not confined to metropolitan areas alone. Semi-urban and rural regions are increasingly adopting UPI, facilitated by the widespread availability of smartphones and expanding internet connectivity. SBI Research notes that UPI has become the preferred mode of payment across diverse demographics, bridging the gap between urban and rural financial participation.
Experts point to several factors driving the trend. UPI’s seamless integration with multiple banking apps and digital platforms makes transactions easier and more versatile. Additionally, government initiatives promoting digital payments and financial inclusion have accelerated the adoption of UPI, particularly among previously underserved populations.
The report also cautions that traditional banks and card networks may face challenges due to this shift. Financial institutions are being urged to innovate by incorporating UPI-based solutions into their services and exploring new offerings to cater to digitally-savvy consumers.
As India’s payment landscape evolves, the rise of UPI marks a pivotal moment in the country’s journey toward a less cash-dependent economy. Analysts believe that continuous innovation and adaptability will be crucial for banks and payment providers to remain relevant in the digital era.
