India and Russia Aim for $100 Billion Annual Trade, Jaishankar Calls for Trade Reforms

India-Russia trade growth plan

August 22, 2025: India and Russia are working to significantly expand their annual trade, targeting $100 billion in the coming years. During his visit to Moscow, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the need to remove trade barriers and simplify regulations to achieve this goal.

Currently, trade between India and Russia is around $66 billion, with India’s exports forming a smaller share. The imbalance is largely driven by India’s imports of Russian oil. Minister Jaishankar highlighted the importance of increasing Indian exports in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and textiles to create a more balanced trade relationship.

During his meetings, the minister pointed out challenges that affect bilateral trade, including regulatory complexities, logistical bottlenecks, and difficulties in banking and payments. He suggested improving trade routes and connectivity, including the International North-South Transport Corridor and the Chennai-Vladivostok route, to make trade more efficient.

Despite external scrutiny, including concerns from the United States over India’s energy imports from Russia, both countries remain committed to deepening economic cooperation. Russian officials reaffirmed their readiness to supply energy and discussed ways to increase exports of goods and services to India to address the trade imbalance.

Officials from both nations expressed confidence in reaching the $100 billion target before 2030. Minister Jaishankar said that by addressing trade bottlenecks and fostering collaboration in key sectors, bilateral trade could grow rapidly in the near future.

In conclusion, India and Russia are set to strengthen their economic partnership. By improving trade infrastructure, reducing barriers, and expanding cooperation across sectors, the two countries aim to establish a robust and balanced trading relationship.
