India Condemns U.S. Tariffs; Jaishankar Vows to Protect Economic Interests

Jaishankar on US tariffs

August 23, 2025: India has strongly opposed the United States’ decision to impose tariffs of up to 50 per cent on Indian goods. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described the tariffs as “unjustified and unreasonable,” asserting that India will firmly defend the interests of its farmers, small businesses, and key industries.

The tariffs were announced by the Trump administration in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The measures will be applied in two stages: an initial 25 per cent duty effective August 7, followed by an additional 25 per cent starting August 27, bringing the total tariffs on certain Indian products to 50 per cent.

Mr. Jaishankar emphasized that India remains open to trade discussions with the United States but will not compromise on policies that protect national economic priorities. “Our energy and trade decisions are based on India’s strategic needs. We will continue to safeguard the livelihoods of millions who depend on these sectors,” he said.

The tariffs are expected to have a significant impact on export-oriented industries. For instance, the diamond cutting and polishing sector in Surat, employing over a million workers, could face considerable challenges as the U.S. is a major market for its products. Business analysts warn that higher tariffs could disrupt trade flows and affect employment in critical industries.

Jaishankar also highlighted that India’s trade practices are consistent with international norms and that similar actions by other nations have not been met with equivalent punitive measures. While maintaining a willingness to engage in dialogue, he reiterated that India’s economic sovereignty is non-negotiable.

In parallel, the United States has nominated Sergio Gor as its next ambassador to India, who will also act as a special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs. The appointment reflects Washington’s intent to maintain diplomatic engagement amid rising trade tensions.

The situation underscores the complexities of global trade, as nations balance domestic priorities with international relations. Although both sides have expressed a readiness to continue talks, a resolution remains uncertain, leaving the future of India-U.S. trade relations in a state of cautious anticipation.
